The Circle of Life
Invited Competition for Greyfriars Place Commission
Westgate, Oxford, 2016
A floor based site specific response to the brief, drawing upon Roger Bacon drawing’s and original materials from the archeological investigations. This artwork is intended to be a simple, effective reflection on the nature of the site of the Westgate development. By avoiding a traditional standing sculpture Elpida aim to emphasis the ground.
By placing the work ‘in’ the ground, it is intended that people’s gaze, walking or cycling through the site, will be drawn to terra firma, continuing Elpida’s interest in ‘what is below or hidden’ and directing anybody looking to consider the place they are in. It also reflects the nature of the archaeological dig, which excavates and is then hidden by development, but though Bacon’s ‘signature’ is retained.
