Ongoing commission working with a Coastal Defence Scheme for Felixstowe sea front, Suffolk, 2006 - 2008

2 km stretch of sea front

A coastal improvement scheme is currently being planned with the current coastal defences replaced by 19 ‘T’ shape rock fishtail groynes, which will be sited on the Southern Felixstowe frontage. These are seen to be the best solution to erosion and flood defence risk, technically, environmentally and economically. Some access points to the beach and across groynes in Languard Common are also planned. This scheme will take place alongside the development of Martello Park, a housing scheme with 11 acres of associated seafront landscaping. The focal point of the scheme is a Martello tower, currently redundant, but with proposals to convert it into an arts space. Some sculptural works are planned for this site and there may be scope for connecting both projects.

I have been commissioned by the Suffolk Coastal District Council to work together and along side the Coastal Defence Scheme.

For this commission I have proposed to create a weather station that will record various data then used and transferred into light and sound at the end of groynes to be installed on the beach front at Felixstowe, giving the local community and visitors a visual information about everyday weather.
